Avram Grant cannot understand why the Spaniard is not played.
After Juan Mata was left out of the Chelsea squad entirely for Saturday’s 2-0 win against Fulham, speculation that the midfielder could leave is at fever pitch.
Jose Mourinho is clearly not an admirer of the Blues’ 2012/13 Player of the Year and former boss Avram Grant has criticised the Portuguese manager for these tactics.
“I personally don’t understand [why he left Mata out],” Grant was quoted in the Metro.
“But in this position Chelsea have so many players, so if Oscar, Eden Hazard, or Willian are out, people will ask why they are out of the squad or team.”
It is true that there is a deep pool of talent in the attacking midfield position at Stamford Bridge currently, with Mata being just one of six first team stars.
Brazilian Oscar has been performing well so far this term, whilst the arrival of Willian and Andre Schurrle, along with the return from a loan spell of Kevin De Bruyne, has made competition for places fierce.
Despite playing 64 matches for the club last season and also being shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year, Mata seems to be bottom of the list of six.
Napoli have shown interest in buying the 25-year-old in January, with manager Rafael Benitez keen to link back up with the Spain international.
There’s likely to be a host of top clubs in for Mata however, as currently Mourinho seems like the only man in world football who understands why the midfielder is not playing.
