Arsenal’s signing of Mesut Ozil was “spectacular”, says FC Barcelona playmaker Cesc Fabregas, who explains just how the Germany international can improve the Gunners.
FC Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has extolled the virtues of Mesut Ozil, who was signed by former club Arsenal for a club record fee of £42.4 million on transfer deadline day.
The Gunners smashed their previous record, with the capture of Ozil around three times the fee paid for the likes of Jose Antonio Reyes, Andrei Arshavin and Sylvain Wiltord – each of whom could claim to be the player Arsene Wenger has paid the most money for depending on whether up front fees or add-ons are taken into account.
Still, that tired debate will no longer be had, as the signing of Ozil blew that out of the water.
“Spectacular,” was how Fabregas described Ozil’s arrival in the Guardian.
“If you have the chance to sign Özil, you can’t let it pass you by. He fits Arsenal perfectly.
“It doesn’t matter if you already have seven or eight players with a similar style, because they’ll understand each other perfectly.
I think [Ozil’s] going to enjoy it enormously. He’s the man who has to make the difference in the final third.
“His last pass is brilliant, he’ll get more space and with space he kills you. He’s going to score more goals himself because of that space. There’s no one better than him for that mediapunta (attacking midfield) role.
“In England opponents follow you, but if a player comes out to you it is easier to play a quick one-two and go beyond him into space.
“In a tactical-defensive sense, it is much more calculated in Spain; it’s harder to score goals than in England.”
Of course, the fact that Ozil left Real Madrid, FC Barcelona’s arch rivals, will also not be lost on Fabregas.
