A supporter from the away end tried to distract the players in the Champions League.
During the Chelsea v Steaua Bucharest match in the Champions League on Wednesday a fan tried to distract the home team with a laser pen.
Demba Ba, Ashley Cole and Jose Mourinho were all targeted by the supporter who was sitting in the away end and the person in question was arrested after the game.
Oscar and Eden Hazard were also on the receiving end of the big green light, which was shined in the players’ faces throughout the tie.
“We arrested a man at the Chelsea-Steaua Bucharest match on suspicion of using a laser pen inside the ground,” a spokesperson from the Met police was quoted by the Evening Standard.
“He was taken to a west London police station pending further enquiries.”
This is the second time that Blues players have been targeted with a laser pen against the Romanians, after a similar incident in the Europa League last year.
The tactic didn’t work however as the hosts ran out 1-0 winners on the night and sank Steaua to the bottom of the group.
It means that Mourinho’s men qualified as winners of their group and will therefore avoid the supposedly tougher opponents in the last-16.
It’s a great improvement from last term, when as defending champions the west London club became the first team to be eliminated from the group stage as holders.
They did go onto triumph in the Europa League that year, but the second tier of European competition is looked down upon and fans at Stamford Bridge will be much more welcoming of a strong Champions League run.
