Toffees make approach for 21 year old van Dijk.
Everton have reportedly made a move for Groningen defender Virgil van Dijk, according to Sky Sports.
The Goodison Park side are reported to be keen on the young centre-back and are monitoring his situation now that the transfer window is open.
Everton recently released a precarious set of financial results meaning money is likely to be tight for any incoming transfers, but with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United reportedly edging closer to the signing of Marouane Fellaini, Toffees manager David Moyes may suddenly find himself with anything up to £22 million to spend.
‘I know certain clubs are following me and that Everton are one of them’ Van Dijk informed Voetbal International.
‘I have heard and read a lot about it and after the winter training camp I will sit down with my agent Henk-Maarten Chin and catch up with where we stand. Of course I am flattered by the interest, but I have to make the best choice for my future career.’
Everton are reluctant to sell Fellaini while they are in the middle of the strongest league campaign they have put together for some years. They may choose to focus on reinforcements for this window before moving on the Belgian midfielder in the summer.
By then, the club may have secured one of those valuable Champions League qualification spots.
The Liverpool side currently sit in 5th position with 36 points, just two points off Chelsea who sit in fourth.
