Bertrand is on the Toffees’ wish list as it looks as if they will lose their left-back.
After failing to secure Leighton Baines in the summer, Manchester United are going to make another move for the Everton star with a £15m bid in January, reports the Daily Express.
The Toffees are desperate to hold onto their star defender, but are aware that the lure of playing at Old Trafford and linking up with former boss David Moyes may be too appealing for Baines to turn down.
Therefore manager Roberto Martinez is looking into other options and has picked out Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand and Swansea City left-back Ben Davies as the favourite candidates.
Replacing Baines is going to be an impossible task of course, due to the influence the 28-year-old has on proceedings at Goodison Park.
Since arriving on Merseyside from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2007, the full-back immediately became an important part of the first team both defensively and in attack.
Baines’ creativity has seen the England international score 24 goals and provide 39 assists in 255 matches in all competitions, despite playing in defence.
With Patrice Evra likely to leave United at the end of the current season when the Frenchman’s contract expires, Moyes is desperate to find a replacement as soon as possible.
Baines is the ideal choice for the Scot, due to their previous working relationship of six years and the Englishman’s reputation as one of the best full-backs in the country.
Whether or not £15m is enough to persuade the defender’s club to sell seems to be the only thing stopping the transfer now.
