The fifth and final Test of the first Ashes series of 2013 is underway with England having the opportunity to beat Australia 4-0 for the first time in the clash’s history.
With the battle for the urn already wrapped up after three Tests the home side could afford to give Chris Woakes and Simon Kerrigan their five-day debuts.
However, the headlines from the Oval belong to Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, who gave both men a torrid time as the 31-year-old battered his way to an impressive century.
Neither Woakes, Kerrigan or the rest of the more senior English bowling attack could cope with Watson and the Aussie finished day one on 176 not-out.
It was lucky that the No.3 was in such good form as neither of the openers Chris Rogers and David Warner, or captain Michael Clarke, managed to get themselves in.
It was a different tail for Steve Smith though, with the all-rounder scoring another half-century and having come into this series with a slightly poor reputation on the international stage, who has proved many of those critics wrong with some solid batting displays.
At 307-4 the tourists appear to hold the advantage as England’s policy of playing two spinners does not seem to have come off.
Yet the English weather is threatening to spoil another Test with rain forecast for much of the weekend.
