Ecuador face France today in Group E of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
France will be aiming to secure the single point they need to secure their qualification as group winners, while Ecuador will be looking to ensure they don’t become the first South American casualty of this World Cup. With Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Argentina all through, Reinaldo Rueda’s side will be looking to pull off a shock result, and join their rivals in the knockout stages.
The French will likely be without Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho, who limped out of his side’s 5-2 thrashing of Switzerland with a thigh problem. Raphael Varane is also unlikely to be risked, after suffering from gastroenteritis. Meanwhile, manager Didier Deschamps will be without former Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who serves a one-match ban for collecting two yellow cards.
The Ecuadorians have a fully-fit squad to choose from with no reported injury concerns, and could be unchanged from the side that beat Honduras. Juan Carlos Paredes, Jefferson Montero and Enner and Antonio Valencia are all one booking away from a ban, but will surely all start.
Even a shock defeat would be unlikely to see France exit the competition. A loss against Ecuador and a win for Switzerland against Honduras would see all three teams tied on six points, but both victories will need to be by margins of at least four goals to send Les Bleus home.
Ecuador will qualify as long as they match Switzerland’s result against Honduras. The two teams are currently tied on three points, but the South Americans have a better goal difference.
