Wade was driving to the basket in the second quarter of the 114-88 defeat to the Cavs, when his right knee buckled and he dropped to the floor.
His landing was particularly awkward as he almost did the splits which caused the inside of his knee to hit the floor, and while play continued at the other end, he was able to get up and walk gingerly off the court to the bench clutching his knee.
While his teammates looked on in concern, the three-time NBA champion limped back to the locker room where he received his initial diagnosis although he is expected to undergo further treatment on Friday.
“I hit the inside of my knee on the court. That’s all I feel right now. I don’t know what I’m going to wake up with, but right now I just feel it on the inside of my knee,” Wade told reporters, according to ESPN.
“It could have been worse. Everybody thought it was a groin. The only thing I feel is where my left knee banged on the floor. That’s the sorest right now.”
The 33-year-old is confident that he will play again this season but the knock will have done him no favours as it was the same knee that he had drained over the weekend.
However, his setback comes at the worst possible time for Miami as they are currently tied with the Boston Celtics for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs race.
It is unclear as to when he will be able to return, but it is most likely that he will sit out Saturday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons.
