Wigan land Austrian from SV Hamburg.
Wigan have re-signed Austrian utility man Paul Scharner on loan for the remainder of the season from Hamburg.
The Austria international, 32, spent four seasons from Wigan between 2006 and 2010.
Scharner has endured a miserable time since leaving the DW Stadium for the Germany and has started just one Bundesliga match for Hamburg all season.
“It really is fantastic to be back,” said Scharner, who becomes Wigan’s fourth signing this January.
Centre-half Scharner, who can also play across the midfield, originally joined Wigan from Norwegian side SK Brann and went on to play in the 2006 League Cup final defeat against Manchester United.
He joined West Brom on a two-year contract in 2010, before moving to Germany in the summer of 2012.
“Wigan will always have a big place in my heart, so to be asked to come back and help the team now is something really special for me,” he added.
