Chelsea striker Diego Costa is a doubt for Saturday’s crunch Premier League clash with Liverpool after picking up a rib injury in Tuesday night’s Capital One Cup defeat to Stoke City.
Costa exited the game, which Chelsea lost in a penalty shootout, after 32 minutes and was then taken to hospital, according to Sky Sports.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Blues boss Jose Mourinho is quoted by The Independent as saying he is unsure whether or not the Spanish forward will be fit to face Liverpool at the weekend.
Costa scored one goal in three matches against Liverpool last season.
On the cause on Costa’s latest injury, Mourinho jokingly added: “I think he punched himself.”
While Mourinho was clearly only messing around, punching yourself is never a laughing matter.
