The 37-year-old ex-England captain is currently training with the Gunners after leaving LA Galaxy in November.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan star has been linked with surprise moves to both West Ham and QPR this month, but Wenger has dismissed suggestions that he was interested in bringing Beckham to Arsenal on Tuesday.
And the Frenchman believes that the legendary midfielder would not have taken so much time off if he still harboured hopes of playing in the English top-flight.
“If, in his mind, he wanted to play in the Premier League he would not have gone on holiday. He would have prepared and come in and tried to impress me. But he has told me has done nothing at all,” Wenger is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
“He told me he has not done anything since he stopped at LA Galaxy. I was surprised. But maybe he wanted to get a bit away from it. But he is 37 as well, you know.’
Wenger also says that Becks admits he is not in good shape but the the Gunners boss is delighted to have the free-agent training with the Arsenal squad because he remains a great professional.
“You know Beckham is super ambitious. He told me that he doesn’t look at all to be in a shape where that (playing) is in his mind.
“He’s fantastic, that’s one of the reasons I take him here as well. Because Beckham is in in the morning already and he does always have a good word … especially for the young English players. They look at him and take his advice on board. His positive advice.
“This guy has a fantastic quality, has done the maximum of his career that you can do. Why? Because he loves football. After training he stays and plays, such a good example to look at.”
Beckham has been linked with moves to mega-rich Ligue 1 outfit PSG and also has offers from Australia, Brazil and China.
Beckham trained with the Arsenal first team on Tuesday – taking West Ham loanee Marouane Chamakh’s number 29 training shirt – but it is believed most of his work will be with fitness coach Tony Colbert.
He is expected to be at Arsenal for between two to three weeks, by which time Wenger says he will have an idea where he can go next.
Wenger added: “I have to see him. Honestly, that (signing Beckham) is not on the agenda. But he asked to come here and get fit.
“What it provoked immediately was a camera outside.
“I thought, ‘What’s happening today? Oh yes, Beckham is here!’”
