Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge scored his first and second goals of the season against Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.
The relief was all over the England international’s face as he smashed home his first of the afternoon in front of the Kop, and what a strike it was.
That volley made it 2-0 to the Reds, building on James Milner’s early opener, which came after just 50 seconds.
However, with the pressure building on Brendan Rodgers following a string of disappointing results, the hosts were unable to hold on to their two-goal lead for long as Rudy Gestede struck for the visitors.
Sturridge found the net again shortly after to restore Liverpool’s two-goal cushion, but it was a case of deja-vu as Gestede bagged his second of the game to set up a nervous finish to the match.
It ended 3-2 to the Reds.
The result will please Rodgers, but he will be especially delighted to see Sturridge back amongst the goals because the 26-year-old has been a significant absentee for the club so far this season.
