Liverpool’s new vice-captain has no intention of leaving the club…
Brendan Rodgers has assured Liverpool fans that star Danish centre-back Daniel Agger will not be leaving the club to join Barcelona, reports the Daily Mirror.
Barcelona had an initial £14m offer for the 27-year-old Dane rejected out of hand, with Liverpool adamant that the centre-half will not be leaving this summer.
Daniel Agger’s agent has mooted that his client could potentially be open to the switch, but his Reds boss has rubbished these suggestions.
“Daniel has given me his word that he loves Liverpool and I will expect him to be here. He had chances to leave, but told me as long as we wanted him here, then he wanted to stay,” explained the Northern Irish boss.
“He’s been brilliant, that is why we have given him the vice-captaincy. The one thing I got from him from the very first conversation is loyalty.
“That is why he signed a new contract and committed himself to the club, and why we gave him a new contract – because we want him to be part of our future,” Rodgers added.
Apart from Luis Suarez, Agger is arguably Liverpool’s most highly regarded player, and the Barcelona bid proves this. Unlike his Uruguayan teammate however, Agger is not publicly pushing from a move away for the club, despite the fact his talents probably merit Champions League football.
With just under three weeks left of the transfer window, Liverpool will hope to hang on to both players to aid their pursuit of a top four finish this season.
