“Finally, after long negotiations, we announce that Fabricio Coloccini not join the squad of San Lorenzo,” the Argentinian club announced on twitter.
Coloccini stunned Toon fans and officials last week by asking to leave the club before the end of the month, citing personal problems.
Boss Alan Pardew has moved fast to bring in defensive reinforcements, with French trio Mathieu Debuchy, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Massadio Haidara all making the move to St James’ Park this month, but the loss of Coloccini would still have been a major blow to the North East outfit.
The Magpies are currently languishing just one place above the Premier League drop zone, after a dismal run culminated in an embarrassing 2-1 home defeat to Reading at the weekend.
Colccini has been with Newcastle since signing from Deportivo de la Coruna in 2008. The centre-half started the season in fine form, with Pardew comparing him to Bobby Moore after his performance against Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby, but his form has tailed off in recent months, admit suggestions he is homesick.
It still looks likely that San Lorenzo could reignite their interest in the Argentina international next summer.
