The Cincinnati Bengals face the Indianapolis Colts in a wild-card match-up on Sunday looking to end a playoff win drought that dates back to 1991.
Cincinnati (10-5-1) were limited to 135 yards total, including 32 on the ground, the last time these two teams met as quarterback Andy Dalton was sacked three times in the team’s first shut-out loss in five years in a 27-0 defeat.
The Colts (11-5) still have an unpredictable defense, but there is no denying their offensive talent with Andrew Luck leading the way.
Luck’s overall season has been his finest so far with a league-leading 40 touchdowns to go with career-bests in yards (4,761), completion percentage (61.7) and yards per pass (7.7).
“We have a lot of respect for what they do,” Luck said Wednesday of the Bengals. “They do a lot and they do it well. … These guys do everything and do it with confidence and competence. It’s a fun team to play.”
Jeremy Hill has played a key role for the Bengals this season after being moved ahead of Giovani Bernard on the depth chart. Cincinnati went 7-3 the rest of the season after the switch at running back and they will hope that will be an area of success for them on Sunday.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not Dalton can change his luck in the post-season, as despite leading the Bengals to a 40-23-1 record in his four seasons with the franchise, he has played poorly while losing in the wild-card round in each of his first three years.
Dalton will not be helped by the absence of his favourite target and star receiver AJ Green who suffered a concussion in last Sunday’s loss at Pittsburgh, while top tight end Jermaine Gresham is questionable with a sore back.
