Former Liverpool ace Alonso ready to reunite with Mourinho.
Real Madrid contract rebel Xabi Alonso is ready to return to the Premier League and join Chelsea, five years after leaving England from Liverpool, according to the Daily Express.
The Spain international’s current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu expires next summer and Madrid have been desperately trying to tie up a new contract.
Los Blancos offered the midfielder a two-year extension with the option of another third year after that, but Alonso is keen to return to the English top tier.
Although it was at Anfield that the Spaniard earned a reputation and the Reds would be keen to bring the 32-year-old back, the lure of Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge seems to be the deciding factor.
Alonso worked under the guidance of Mourinho for three years in the Spanish capital, where the pair won La Liga and the Cope Del Rey.
Therefore now the 50-year-old is once again in charge of the Blues it’s the west London outfit that the midfield ace wants to join.
Alonso has been a consistent presence for both Madrid and the Merseysiders before that, playing over 200 matches in all competitions for both clubs.
The Los Merengues star also has 107 caps for the Spanish national side to date and was a key member of the team that won consecutive European Championships and a first ever World Cup triumph for the country.
Alonso generally operates as a more defensively minded midfielder, but does have an impressive range of passing and a keen eye for goal when given the opportunity.
