Essien’s representatives are preparing for the Ghana international to leave.
Michael Essien is ready to leave Chelsea in the January transfer window according to the player’s agent, as the midfielder struggles to get first team football.
Since returning from a year long loan spell with Real Madrid in the summer the Ghana international has made just six appearances for the Blues in all competitions.
This has led Essien’s representative Fabian Piveteau to reveal that the 31-year-old is ready to depart Stamford Bridge and that several sides are interested.
“[Essien] could leave Chelsea this winter,” Piveteau was quoted by Goal.
“Several major European clubs playing in the Champions League were informed and the situation should settle down within the next 10 days.
“You should know that Michael was not on the list of players who can play in the Champions League with Chelsea, so he is free to play in the competition with another club.”
It’s this ability to be able to represent a new side in Europe’s top club competition that makes the signing of Essien so much more appealing.
The African used to be a vital part of the Blues first team and helped them to two Premier League titles and four FA Cups.
However, injury halted Essien’s career in west London for some time and he spent long spells watching from the sidelines before Jose Mourinho gave the midfielder a lifeline whilst in charge of Madrid.
The Ghanaian’s former side Bastia have been linked with the player but it’s unlikely the Ligue 1 club could afford the star’s wages.
