English sides set to go head to head in race to sign Fabio Coentrao
Real Madrid have alerted two of the Premiership’s biggest clubs after revealing they are keen to offload the player, according to The Metro.
Coentrao, who only joined the club from Benfica in 2011, has found himself increasingly marginalised at Real Madrid with manager Jose Mourinho preferring the Brazilian Marcelo is Coentrao’s favoured left-back position.
The Portuguese international is highly-rated, having cost Real Madrid around £27 million, and is likely going to be able to have his pick from some of Europe’s top clubs.
Tottenham have been linked with the player in recent times, often as part of a potential deal involving Gareth Bale, but it now appear Chelsea and Manchester City have moved into pole position in the race to seal his signature.
The Stamford Bridge outfit are looking for a replacement for Ashley Cole, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and see Coentrao as the perfect mentor for young Ryan Bertrand.
But they face stiff competition from the Premiership champions who are intrigued by Coentrao’s versatility. Although preferring a left-back position, Coentrao is also adept at playing on the left or in the centre of midfield.
Earlier in the season, the 24 year old defender served a four match ban for insulting a referee whilst sitting on the subs’ bench.
