Everton look like completely different competitors this season under new boss Ronald Koeman, and the chances of them finishing in the top 4 this season should not be ignored.
They do only have an outside chance of getting Champions League football next season though, with the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, and Liverpool way in front of them in the table, but recent results suggest they could still do it if other results in the future go their way.
Below we’ll look at some of the reasons why Everton have been a force this season, and why they still have an outside chance of finishing in the top 4.
Koeman has changed his squad around this season and has bought in multiple new faces to try and get Everton fighting for the European places. Top 4 would be great for Everton, but even if they can get to 5th spot this season it would be a great achievement in getting Europa League football again. Koeman made two additions to his squad in January, bringing in Morgan Schneiderlin from Manchester United, and also 19-year-old prospect Ademola Lookman from Charlton Athletic, so he has definitely strengthened the squad to give Everton a better chance.
Proven Premier League manager
Koeman was once in charge of Southampton, and he did great things with them during his time, so he already has the Premier League experience needed to succeed, and he is hoping he will be able to do just that with Everton.
Everton still have to play the big guns
After beating Manchester City in recent weeks, which gave Everton a chance at the top 4 this season, they still have to play the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, and Tottenham before the end, so if they can take a similar performance from the Manchester City game they will have a real chance of gaining on the teams above them.
Teams above are hitting a blip
Manchester United seem to be doing okay under new boss Jose Mourinho at the moment, and Arsenal seem to be back to winning ways, but their local Merseyside rivals Liverpool, and also Manchester City, look like they are hitting a blip in their season which could prove to be key for Everton to take advantage and leapfrog them in the league.
Everton are becoming consistent
Everton seem to be on a consistent run of form in recent weeks and have taken a lot of points from some good sides in the league, and if they can continue that form and even just avoid losing, then they could find themselves creeping up the table before the end of the season, which will surprise a lot of clubs and fans.
What do the bookmakers think?
The bookmakers, including Betfirst, don’t think Everton have much chance, if any at all, of breaking into the top 4 this season, but if Everton continue to grind out results and come up with similar performances that helped them beat Manchester City 4-0 in previous weeks, there is nothing to say they can’t kick on and battle until the end. The bookmakers do not see it happening and neither do a lot of Everton fans, but if they can really push on from here on out and capitalize on their rivals’ downfall, there is no reason why they can’t at least get in the top 5 for Europa League football next season.
