Cameroon face Croatia in what is surely a do-or-die encounter deep in the Amazon Rainforest, with both sides knowing that a defeat would be likely to mean facing a plane journey home at the end of the group stages.
Whilst both nations were defeated in their opening matches, things are somewhat more optimistic for Croatia, who could take heart from their spirited performance against the hosts and the controversial manner in which the game turned in the Brazilians’ favour.
Cameroon, meanwhile, were largely disappointing in their defeat to Mexico, with the 1-0 scoreline flattering the Indomitable Lions more than it did their Central American opponents.
The big question for Croatian coach Niko Kovac is whether to move new Barcelona signing Ivan Rakitic into a more advanced midfield position, sacrificing Mateo Kovacic in an attempt to bring the best out of Rakitic in the way that Sevilla managed in La Liga last season.
This would be likely to see Ognjen Vukojevic come in to partner Luka Modric in central midfield, whilst striker Mario Mandzukic will come in to replace Hull City’s Nikica Jelavic after he served a one-game suspension against Brazil.
Cameroon manager Volker Finke may choose to start Lorient striker Vincent Aboubakar, a surprise omission against Mexico, with the big forward likely to offer something different for the African side.
Captain and talisman Samuel Eto’o misses out for Cameroon with injury, meaning that Finke is likely to deploy a youthful and pacey front three of Aboubakar, Benjamin Moukandjo and Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting, a player who had a particularly impressive season with Bundesliga club Mainz.
