The website claims that the Gunners chief contract guru Dicky Law has been in Spain to negotiate the transfer of Villa, the country’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Barcelona have publicly insisted that the 31-year-old will not be sold this month but the Gunners are hopeful they can push through a sensational deal before Thursday’s 11pm transfer deadline.
The Catalans have reportedly softened their hardline stance on Villa’s availability in the last few days and the Spain international is understood to be “very keen” to join Arsenal, after growing frustrated at his lack of opportunities at the Nou Camp.
The former Valencia forward has started just 7 La Liga games for the runaway leaders this season but scored five times, suggesting the goalscoring form that earned him a £33m move from the Mestalla in 2009 has not deserted him.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is a huge admirer of Villa’s and is ready to pay up to £13.8 million to sign him on a permanent deal and match his current £110,000-a-week wages.
