Liverpool look set to make a loss on yet another of Kenny Dalglish’s expensive flops, after agreeing a fee with West Ham for Stewart Downing. Sky Sports News says the winger, 29, will have a medical in East London on Monday.
The Reds have already offloaded £35m striker Andy Carroll to the Hammers and Downing, who arrived from Aston Villa for £20m in the same summer, looks set to follow his former teammate to Upton Park.
Downing had the inconspicuous honour of failing to record a single Premier League goal or assist in his first season at Anfield, but showed some improvement under Brendan Rodgers last term, notching up three goals and five assists in 29 league appearances.
Newcastle had been linked with a move the former Middlesborough man but Scott Wilson, a journalist for the Northern Echo, confirmed the Toon had failed to land Downing, who will join West Ham for £5m – a £15m loss…
As expected, no Stewart Downing to #NUFC – the Teessider is in London this morning completing a £5m move to West Ham instead.
