The Spaniard, who replaced fans’ favourite Roberto Di Matteo as the Chelsea head coach earlier this campaign, is reportedly already under severe pressure at Stamford Bridge following shock recent home defeats to relegation-threatened Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League, followed by Swansea City in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night.
Both those losses provoked yet another angry response from the home faithful, meaning that the Spaniard has now all but given up hope of landing the Chelsea job on a full-time basis at the end of this season, and as a result he has ordered his advisers to start preparing the ground for his exit this summer.
And, with current Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho also reportedly under huge pressure in the Spanish capital after a poor season in which his team are already out of the title race, there appears to be a vacancy coming up at a club which Benitez knows well from his time both playing and managing there.
Benitez knows that he will face stiff competition from the likes of Paris Saint-Germain head coach Carlo Ancelotti and former Juventus and Italy manager Marcello Lippi, however, the one-time Liverpool coach feels that both his managerial record and his past connections at the Bernabeu give him the edge over that pair.
