For the second consecutive years, Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich face Manchester City, themselves now crowned as domestic kings, in the group stages of the Champions League, with the presence of AS Roma making their draw a particularly fiendish one.
City have not had the ideal start to the season, dropping more points in a 2-2 draw at Arsenal this weekend following a shock 1-0 home defeat to Stoke City, already leaving them five points off the pace that is being set by leaders Chelsea.
One of the main objectives for Manuel Pellegrini this season will be improved continental displays, however, after they made it to the knock-out stage of this competition for the first time last year – with a victory in Munich being their finest result.
Stevan Jovetic may miss out, but Sergio Aguero scored a fine goal at the Emirates Stadium and will be keen to continue that form, with Jesus Navas also looking to build on a good display.
Pellegrini also has the option of switching to a more solid system including three orthodox central midfielders, with the possibility of playing both Fernando and Fernandinho alongside Yaya Toure.
Bayern were victorious at the weekend, with Franck Ribery’s return to form and fitness coming just at the wrong time as far as their Premier League visitors are concerned.
