Former Spanish international goalie and Barcelona director of football Andoni Zubizarretta has drawn up a short-list of five potential replacements should Valdes decide to leave.
De Gea is just one of those options, alongside Maarten Stekelenburg of Roma, Vicente Guaita of Valencia, Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marc Ter Stegen and Bayer Leverkusen’s Bernd Leno.
A deal may more likely that initially thought, with Alex Ferguson reportedly unconvinced with the Spanish goalkeeper.
After a tumultuous start, Ferguson kept faith in De Gea, believing his inconsistent performances to be merely a symptom of the player’s youth.
While the player’s shot-stopping capabilities are not in doubt, questions are increasingly surfacing over his capabilities underneath the aerial ball.
That may lead to Ferguson being prepared to cash in on the player and seek a replacement.
De Gea is rumoured to be willing to consider the possibility of a return to his homeland which may pave the way to a deal being done.
