La Liga giants still sniffing around Liverpool’s impressive vice-captain…
Barcelona are still interested in Liverpool’s Danish centre-half Daniel Agger, and could lodge a £10m bid before the end of the month, reports the Mirror.
The tattooed stopper was made Liverpool’s vice-captain this summer following Jamie Carragher’s retirement – and his team are yet to concede a Premier League goal this season under his stewardship.
A fee of £10m would undoubtedly be rejected out of hand, with Liverpool likely to refuse any bid for the player’s services.
The Reds have shown this season in their handling of the Luis Suarez saga that they will not be bullied into selling their best players to Champions League sides.
A move for Agger, could show the increasing desperation of the La Liga champions to bring in a defender before the transfer window closes.
The Catalan club have been targeting a new centre-back all summer, but were rebuffed in attempts to sign primary targets Thiago Silva from PSG and David Luiz from Chelsea. To rub salt in their wounds, PSG also snapped up 19-year-old Marquinhos from Roma, who was said to be Barcelona’s backup plan if they failed to sign Brazil captain Thiago Silva.
As a result, Barcelona are still very short in central defence. While Gerard Pique is expected to start in defence for years to come, his defensive partner Carlos Puyol is injury prone and ageing. Barcelona have regularly had to use midfielders like Javier Mascherano or Alex Song alongside Pique – and were even forced to start the inexperienced Marc Bartra in their Champions League semi-final defeat to Bayern Munich last season.
