After missing out on Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and David Luiz, the Catalan giants may bid for Kompany…
Barcelona could move for Manchester City’s 27-year-old centre-half captain Vincent Kompany, reports ESPN.
Chelsea and Liverpool appear unwilling to sell either David Luiz or Daniel Agger so the La Liga champions could make an ambitious move for City’s star defender.
The deal could be a non-starter as City would be loathe to sell their captain, and are definitely not in a financial position where they would need to consider selling the Belgian stopper. New boss Manuel Pellegrini has been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Pepe, and with Matija Nastasic, would have no intention whatsoever of selling the Belgian.
It appears Barcelona could continue to be frustrated in their attempts to strengthen their defence.
The Catalan club have been targeting a new centre-back all summer, but have been rebuffed in their attempts to sign primary target Thiago Silva from PSG. To rub salt in their wounds, PSG also snapped up 19-year-old Marquinhos from Roma, who was said to be Barcelona’s backup plan if they failed to sign Brazil captain Thiago Silva.
As a result, Barcelona are still very short in central defence. While Gerard Pique is expected to start in defence for years to come, his defensive partner Carlos Puyol is injury prone and ageing. Barcelona have regularly had to use midfielders like Javier Mascherano or Alex Song alongside Pique – and played the inexperienced Marc Bartra in their Champions League semi-final defeat to Bayern Munich.
