The first major of the long tennis season is already upon us – mere weeks after the 2013 one ended.

The Australian Open has begun.

Two players have dominated the singles events in recent years – Novak Djokovic has won the last three Grand Slams at Melbourne Park, while Victoria Azarenka has claimed both the last two titles on the women’s side.

Last year, Rafael Nadal did not compete in the Australian Open due to his recurring knee issues, and the Spanish world number one will represent a major challenge to Djokovic even on his less favoured hard courts.

Andy Murray reached the final last year, but does not expect to be a major competitor in the 2014 Australian Open due to ongoing recovery from back surgery, while the 32 year-old Roger Federer’s current form is somewhat of an unknown quantity. Federer’s compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka – fresh from winning Swiss person of the year – could be a better bet, while the tenacity of David Ferrer will always make him a contender.

On the ladies’ side, Azarenka is not the favourite for the trophy despite the aforementioned 2012 and 2013 victories.

Serena Williams has won four of the last six Grand Slams, but hasn’t claimed an Australian Open since 2010. She remains favourite though, because on her day the American is the best female tennis player on the WTA tour.

Maria Sharapova, Li Na and Agnieszka Radwanska will hope to cause an upset.
