While the game was a thriller, providing one of the highlights of the weekend, the off-pitch action was far uglier as fans of the North London club came to blows over a banner calling for Gunners’ manager Arsene Wenger to leave the club.
The banner read ‘Arsene, thanks for the memories but it’s time to say goodbye’, provoking fury amongst some sections of the Arsenal support.
Some fans demanded the banner be put away, which subsequently lead to punches being thrown when the banner holders refused.
One supporter, thought to have been one of the men who unveiled the banner, is understood to have been forcibly removed from the stadium but the fate of the other people involved in the bust-up is unclear.
The club declined to comment on the incident.
Fortunes were more favourable on the pitch as Olivier Giroud fired Arsenal into the next round. The French centre-forward scored twice before a Theo Walcott goal gave the Gunners a 3-2 victory following a committed display from plucky Brighton. Arsenal will fancy their chances of success this year with a number of top Premier League sides having been knocked out this weekend.
