Per Mertesacker has established himself as one of the best centre-halves in the country after a difficult start…
Arsenal’s giant German defender Per Mertesacker is set to be given a new contract at the Emirates following his excellent start to the season, reports Goal.
The 29-year-old has formed an impressive central defensive partnership with Laurent Koscielny, which has forced club captain Thomas Vermaelen to start games from the bench. Mertesacker and Koscielny have marshalled Arsenal to the top of the Premier League table.
As a result French boss Arsene Wenger wants to tie the German to the Emirates club for the foreseeable future, as he begins to enter the peak years of his career as a defender.
Mertesacker will be offered a three year extension to his contract which expires in 20 months time. The 6 ft, 5″ defender has started 11 of Arsenal’s 12 matches this season, only missing the away victory to Sunderland with illness. He also starts for the German national side alongside Borussia Dortmund’s Matts Hummels, and will be joining the squad shortly for their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches.
Arsenal next take on Nowrich City at the Emirates on October 19, where Mertesacker will hope to continue his solid start to the season.
