Arsene Wenger managed to convince Ozil to move to the Emirates…
Arsenal’s record £42m deadline day signing Mesut Ozil turned down a last minute mega offer from Ligue 1 side PSG, reports the Mirror.
The 24-year-old German playmaker joined the Emirates side in the second most expensive transfer ever made by a British club, but huge the huge spending Parisian side tried to scupper the deal.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger managed to convince Ozil of his side’s project – and despite an even bigger offer from PSG, who have already brought in Edinson Cavani for £56m this summer, Ozil signed a £140,000-per-week contract at the north-London club.
The German felt his first-team status was under threat following the world-record arrival of Gareth Bale at Madrid, and Arsenal moved swiftly to take advantage of this. Wenger admitted that he wanted to sign the player three years ago before he joined Los Blancos – but three years later, he has finally got his man.
Ozil made it clear that the chance to work with Wenger played a big part in his decision.
“I am thrilled to be joining a club of the stature of Arsenal and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League,” he said.
“It will be great for my own personal development as a player and I am particularly looking forward to working with Arsene Wenger.
“From our negotiations it is clear the club has huge ambition and I look forward to being part of an exciting future.”
