The Gunners had stepped up their chase of the Chilean international following his performances at the World Cup, but faced some stiff competition from the likes of Liverpool and Juventus.
He had recently looked as though he would be on his way to Anfield as a part of the deal that would see Luis Suarez move to Spain, though Sanchez was not keen on a switch to the Northwest after his family insisted on heading for London instead.
Sanchez joined Barcelona in 2011 from Serie A side Udinese, and went on to be a firm fan favourite as he clocked up 141 appearances, scoring 47 goals in the process.
He would often be used as a backup to Lionel Messi, though was more than capable of showing that he was worthy of a starting spot, regardless of whether Messi was fit or not.
Capable of playing through the middle or out wide, his versatility will be a welcome addition to Wenger’s attacking options, especially considering that his forward players were hit with a myriad of injuries which ultimately derailed their Premier League title challenge.
