Wenger needs cover for injured Arteta in centre of the park.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will assess the fitness of West Ham United midfield player Mohamed Diame before deciding whether to make a bid for the powerful Senegal international, according to reports in the Sun.
The North Londoners have been keeping close tabs on the 25-year-old, who West Ham manager Sam Allardyce bought from Wigan Athletic at the start of this season on a free transfer, and with the East End club about to start negations with the player on a new deal that would potentially double his release clause to £7 million, the Gunners are hoping to act quickly in order to sign Diame on the cheap, especially in light of the recent calf injury picked up by key playmaker Mikel Arteta in training.
However, one major sticking point remains the player’s fitness record, with Diame currently still out of action having torn his hamstring late last year, although he did return to the substitutes’ bench for the Hammers’ Premier League defeat at Sunderland.
And, Wenger plans to travel to Old Trafford to watch Diame in action in West Ham’s FA Cup third-round replay with Manchester United, where he is expected to play some part in proceedings, before making a final decision on whether or not to make a £3.5m offer for his services.
