Ardiles tips his fellow Argentine for success at the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal target Gonzalo Higuain can be as good as Robin van Persie, according to Tottenham legend Ossie Ardiles.
Real Madrid striker Higuain is closing in on a club-record deal to join Arsenal, with the 25-year-old’s agent confirming the Gunners were winning the race to sign his client earlier this week.
The Argentina international has been in and out of Real’s first team since arriving from River Plate in 2005 but has still bagged 122 goals in 266 appearances for Los Blancos, including 107 La Liga strikes.
And former Spurs player and manager Ardiles believes his compatriot can be as good as Van Persie, who left Arsenal to join Manchester United in a £24m deal last summer and has won the Premier League Golden Boot in back-to-back campaigns.
“As good as Robin van Persie? Of course he can be, that’s how good Higuain is,” Ardiles told Goal.com.
“You remember that when Van Persie arrived he was not exactly, immediately, the best player, it took a bit of time. But he was younger – Higuain is much more experienced.”
“He’s a top, top player. He will always score goals. He likes to be in the box all the time and he works hard for his team – wherever he goes, he’s going to be great for the team that he’s joining.”
