Wenger set to make ambitious swoop for Barcelona batter Javier Mascherano…
Arsenal are targeting Barcelona’s 29-year-old Argentinian defensive midfielder Javier Mascherano, and are set to make a bid before the transfer window slams shut on Monday evening, reports talkSPORT.
The Gunners have just snapped up returning French midfielder Mathieu Flamini, but Mascherano would be considered a higher calibre option.
Barcelona often play Mascherano as a central defender due to the unrivalled number of world-class central midfield options they have at their disposal, but the Argentine is an extremely talented midfielder.
The former Argentina captain is only a rotation option at the Nou Camp, but would walk in as a guaranteed starter at the Emirates, providing a brilliant base for creative midfielders like Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla to provide from.
With only two days left of the transfer window, Arsene Wenger has earmarked Mascherano as a potential big name target.
The Gunners have no questions over whether Mascherano can cut it in the Premier League, as he was fantastic for Rafa Benitez’s very impressive Liverpool side between 2007 and 2010, forming a midfield partnership with Xabi Alonso and Steven Gerrard that was as good as anything in Europe.
Having already sold Thiago to Bayern Munich this summer, the Catalan giants may not wish to sell another midfielder. If the Gunners lodge a bid over £20m though, Barcelona will likely accept a deal, due to the midfielder’s advancing years and the depth of ability already in the squad.
