How’s this for a transfer merry-go-round…?!
Arsenal will move for Atletico Madrid’s 24-year-old Brazilian striker Diego Costa, a former Liverpool target, if Karim Benzema is unattainable, reports the Express.
Arsene Wenger has pinpointed Real Madrid’s world-class French forward Benzema as his priority in the last week of the transfer window, but the La Liga giants are unlikely to want to sell the striker after already letting Gonzalo Higuain join Napoli earlier in the summer.
Liverpool had targeted Costa as a possible replacement for Arsenal target Luis Suarez, but after lodging a £23m bid, a deal failed to materialise. As Arsenal have failed to tempt Liverpool into selling Suarez, despite multiple bids, they will instead move for the former Reds target to fix their forward woes.
Diego Costa has recently signed a new contract with Atletico, and scored two goals on the opening day of the La Liga season – so would likely command a very large fee.
In an added twist, If Arsenal do manage to pull off the targeted Benzema deal, Real Madrid will likely move for Liverpool’s Suarez as a replacement, in what’s turning out to be the transfer merry-go-round of the summer.
Costa bagged 20 goals in all competitions, which is one more than Benzema’s 19, but much less than Suarez’s 30.
