Gunners target Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo…
Arsenal are set to make Luiz Gustavo their first major signing of the summer, reports The Daily Mirror.
The Gunners are set to bid £15m for the tough-tackling Brazilian, as Arsene Wenger believes his team is short in midfield.
The 25-year-old defensive midfielder does not automatically start for Bayern Munich, but would walk into Arsenal’s midfield – and would provide a great platform for more creative players like Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere to shine.
Gustavo has cemented a starting position for Brazil alongside Tottenham’s new signing Paulinho, but the tough tackling midfielder will want guaranteed first team football ahead of next summer’s World Cup in his home country.
Bayern currently have Javi Martinez, Bastian Schweinsteiger and new signing Thiago battling for a central-midfield starting position, and we are yet to see whether new manager Pep Guardiola rates Gustavo.
Gustavo would fit perfectly into Arsenal’s side as a deep lying midfielder, and allow Cazorla and Wilshere to bomb forward and create chances. Mikel Arteta currently plays the role for the Gunners, but despite his passing ability, the ageing Spaniard is not very dynamic.
Gustavo would provide a perfect platform for Arsenal’s creative players to perform, although it is unknown whether Guardiola is willing to part with the holding midfielder.
A bid of around £15m is expected to bring the German treble winners to the negotiating table.
