Arsenal retain hope of bringing Atletico Madrid star to Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal are still hopeful of bringing Atletico Madrid ace Adrian Lopez to north London, despite the forward’s recent words saying he was happy in Spain.
The 25 year-old has been linked with a move the Gunners for the entirety of the transfer window and previous months, but gave an interview to Spanish media yesterday saying he knew nothing of interest from north London.
“I try to isolate myself from the rumours,” Lopez is quoted as saying by Eurosport.
“We are used to them and do not take them seriously. I am very happy at Atletico.”
“I am happy here and it is my intention to continue here.
“The good thing at the moment is that the team is doing very well. I would like to stay for a while yet.”
Arsenal’s pursuit of Adrian appears to be based on two factors. The first: a reported buyout clause of £15 million. The second: his impressive form in the UEFA Europa League last season, when he scored 11 goals in his 19 matches to help Atletico Madrid to help the club win the trophy.
Domestically though, his form has not been quite so impressive. Ten goals in his 51 La Liga appearances for Atleti is not a particularly fearsome record, but that may be apportioned to star man Radamel Falcao’s preference to play as a solo forward.
For the Gunners he could be an intriguing partner for either Olivier Giroud or Theo Walcott, and his versatility could be useful too – the 25 year-old is capable of playing on either wing.
