Gunners hope to lure SC Freiburg’s Matthias Ginter to the Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal have stepped up their chase for SC Freiburg utility man Matthias Ginter after sending Francis Coquelin to the German club on a season-long loan, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Gunners have been tracking 19-year-old Ginter for some time and boss Arsene Wenger hopes the deal for defensive midfielder Coquelin will act as a sweeter.
Champions League finalists Borussia Dortmund are also interested in the youngster, who is the latest in a long line of talent to emerge from Freiburg’s impressive academy.
Ginter spent most of last season at centre-half for the Bundesliga club but can also play as an enforcer and even started one league match last season as an auxiliary striker, making 23 Bundesliga appearances in total.
He was also made three appearances for Germany at this summer’s under-21 European Championship in Israel.
Arsenal are in need of a defensive midfield cover, with Abou Diaby not due to return to action until at least Christmas.
