This will be the most important signing Arsenal make in January.
Jack Wilshere is set to sign a new five-year deal at the club, allaying fears that he could be the next talented star to jump ship.
The news will come as a timely boost to under-pressure boss Arsene Wenger, who is facing more criticism of his methods than at any point during his 16-year stay in North London.
Wenger will be aware that Wilshere is a once-in-a-generation type player, who deserves to be challenging for titles and playing in the Champions League.
At present, even qualifying for the latter, let alone pushing for the Premier League crown, looks beyond Arsenal and Wenger will be relieved that Wilshere has both the committment and patience to stick with the struggling Emirates outfit.
That said, it’s easy to forget that the England international is still just 20 and has time on his side.
Wilshere is already one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League and Wenger will be well aware that he can build a team around the left-footer – provided he remains in charge, that is.
