Gunners keen on Real’s Karim Benzema.
Arsenal are set to make a £40m move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The report follows claims last week from French newspaper Le 10 Sport that the Gunners were considering a £39m bid for the Frenchman, after failing in their attempts to land Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.
Despite a 3-0 Champions League play-off win at Fenerbahce on Wednesday night, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is under pressure to spend, after failing to make a single signing barring youngster Yaya Sanogo thus far this summer.
The North London outfit were linked with a move for Benzema’s former Real teammate Gonzalo Higuain earlier last month but the Argentine has since joined Napoli.
Higuain’s departure has left Benzema as the only senior centre-forward at the Santiago Bernabeu and the 25-year-old scored in Carlo Ancelotti’s first league match, a 2-1 home win over Real Betis on Sunday.
Although Benzema’s departure would therefore seem unlikely, the expected arrival of Tottenham’s Gareth Bale in the Spanish capital could see Ancelotti move Cristiano Ronaldo into a central striking role and the Welshman’s reported £95m price tag may force Real to sell players, including Benzema, to fund the deal.
