Some of Arsenal’s best young players all set to agree long term contracts to stay at Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal look set to provide their supporters with a major boost with the announcement that five of their most promising players have agreed extensions on their contracts.
As fanatix confirmed yesterday, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey are amongst those who will commit their futures to Arsenal, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson also set to be confirmed publicly simultaneously.
Arsene Wenger has confirmed he’d like to keep a British core to the squad, and this will go some way to achieving that.
“Before we had young players like Fabregas and Nasri,” said Wenger earlier this month.
“Now we have some good young British players for the first time in the group – Gibbs, Ramsey, Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain for example. We have a core of young players that we want to build on.
“We are still only focused on quality but for the first time England produces so much quality. It’s not that I have changed. For me the quality is the most important thing.”
Reading between the lines, the clear message is that Wenger hopes by making the core of the squad British, they will be less likely to move on. Everyone remembers every Barcelona players repeating ad nauseam Cesc Fabregas’ Barca DNA.
“My dream was always to produce 60 per cent English and 40 per cent foreign young players,” added Wenger.
“Honestly it’s a real problem in Europe that you [must] face by education, because the education usually is the investment of the local country and so you need a certain share. Maybe 60 per cent is local and 40 per cent is from the rest of Europe.”
Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gibbs, Jenkinson and Ramsey all committing to Arsenal will be a valuable boost to the club after recent tough times, and perhaps it may even convince Theo Walcott to join them in agreeing a long term stay.
