Gunners manager Arsene Wenger attempted to bring Barca’s Spain international to the Emirates during the January transfer window, only to fail to persuade the 31-year-old forward to move to north London.
However, the Frenchman is now starting to draw up his transfer list for the end of this season and instead of returning to Camp Nou in order to land Villa, the club will move their attentions towards Fiorentina’s 23-year-old front man.
Also said to be on the club’s attacking radar along with the Montenegro international are Napoli’s deadly forward Edinson Cavani and Atletico de Madrid striker Adrian Lopez.
And, as well as a new front man, Wenger is also looking to sign a goalkeeper, with Liverpool shot-stopper Jose Manuel Reina his reported number-one target, a defensive midfield player, with Toulouse’s Etienne Capoue top of Arsenal’s wish list and a new centre back, with Marseille defender Nicolas N’koulou thought to be interesting the club.
Meanwhile, it is expected that both Sebastien Squillaci and Andrey Arshavin will be allowed to leave the Emirates on free transfers this summer.
