The 26-year-old goalscorer was in talks with the Gunners over the possibility of a summer move before he opted to return to the club where he was playing on loan.
However, his poor start to the campaign is believed to have had him on the look out for a move elsewhere and Wenger could be waiting to pounce as he looks for yet another striker.
With just Danny Welbeck as their only realistic option to lead the line, Wenger will want more strength in depth to ensure they recover their title challenge, though injured hit man Olivier Giroud could make a return to action sooner than expected.
