Arsenal readying move for young star as Bacary Sagna contract talks impasse mean he is likely to exit Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal are looking at a move for Toulouse full back Serge Aurier after contract talks with Bacary Sagna broke down.
France international Sagna has been a mainstay of the Gunners’ defence since his move in summer 2007, and looks set to join Theo Walcott out the door this summer – though unlike Walcott, Sagna will command a fee.
The 29 year-old’s current contract ends in summer 2014, whilst Walcott will be free to leave the club at the end of the season.
It is thought that Inter Milan are the most interested team, and Arsenal fans will be gulping at the prospect of losing another of their best players.
Still, Aurier would make a fine replacement, and if Arsene Wenger can sign the 19 year-old for somewhere close to the amount he receives for Sagna, it would have to be regarded as decent business.
Aurier is an extremely versatile defender, already regarded as one of the best in Ligue 1 despite his tender age.
Confident in both full back positions, Aurier has also filled in at centre back, defensive midfield, and even on the right wing when asked.
A tremendous athlete, he is strong in the tackle, good in the air, and his well attuned positioning mean he makes a decent amount of interceptions.
Aurier is also a great threat going forward.
His tricky dribbling skills are atypical of the average defender, and he has supplied his team-mates with multiple assists this season.
Though he has declared his international future to Cote D’Ivoire, there would be no work permit trouble as he has dual French nationality.
