Frenchman says Wenger is under ‘big pressure’ to deliver silverwear.
Gunners legend Patrick Vieira has heaped the pressure on Arsene Wenger by insisting Arsenal ‘need’ to win a trophy this season.
Vieira, who is current director of development at Premier League Champions Man City, spent nine years with Arsenal until 2005, winning three Premier League titles and four FA Cups.
Arsenal have gone eight years without a trophy and, while Vieira accepts that Wenger’s team still play beautiful football, he admitted that the pressure was on his former mentor to deliver this season.
“Every single manager who is in charge of a big club and doesn’t win trophies will be under pressure. That’s part of our football world today,” the Frenchman told The Sun.
“The only way to keep people happy is to win silverware. I don’t agree with it but I understand it.
“And I think any and every manager in the top five who goes six or seven years without winning a trophy will find themselves under big pressure.
“But they know it’s part of the game, whether you’re in Spain, Italy or England,” continued the 36-year-old, who also represented AC Milan, Juventus and Internazionale before retiring at City in 2011.
“So what Arsenal need now is to win a trophy, it’s not enough just playing beautiful football any more.”
