Wenger interested in Reid.
Despite having had a great start to the season so far Arsenal are still after defensive reinforcement and West Ham United’s Winston Reid has emerged as the ideal candidate, reports the Metro.
Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker have formed a strong partnership at the heart of the Gunners defence, but question marks still remain over club captain Thomas Vermaelen.
The Belgian has gone from being recognised as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, to being out-of-favour at the Emirates Stadium.
The 27-year-old has played just three matches in all competitions so far this term and two of those appearances were in the League Cup – a tournament where Arsene Wenger has traditionally played a second string side.
With Johan Djourou on-loan at Hamburger SV and unlikely to be brought back into the first team fold, the north London team could do with more defensive cover.
Wenger is said to be a big fan of Reid and with the New Zealand international enjoying a superb season at Upton Park this term.
Head scout Steve Rowley has been following the progress of the centre-back closely and has recommended that the side try and sign the 25-year-old.
Reid was bought by West Ham in the summer of 2010 from Danish club FC Midtjylland and has gone onto play 91 games for the Hammers in all competitions.
Wenger has also shown interest in other defenders such as Saint-Etienne’s Kurt Zouma and Schalke 04 ace Krygiakos Papadopolous, but the Irons star looks set to be the Frenchman’s first choice.
