Arsenal could yet sign Montpellier star despite Newcastle having a bid accepted.
Arsenal could make a late bid to sign Montpellier HSC captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, fanatix has learned.
With Newcastle United announcing today that they have already had a bid accepted though, they will have to move fast if they are to secure a deal for the France international.
23 year-old Yanga-Mbiwa is an intriguing transfer target for both the Gunners and Newcastle.
The centre back had a brilliant campaign for Montpellier last season as they won the Ligue 1 title, but has been somewhat more shaky this term.
Still, when he meets his potential he is a force to be reckoned with, and with Fabricio Coloccini looking to leave Newcastle, he would be an excellent replacement.
For the Gunners, he would be a valuable alternative to whichever of Thomas Vermaelen, Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny is currently first choice – and at 23 years of age, has the potential to develop into a truly world class talent.
What may also interest Arsene Wenger is that Yanga-Mbiwa offers versatility.
He has filled in impressively at both right back and defensive midfield at various points in his career.
With Arsenal looking at their best with a proper holding midfielder – as illustrated by their best performance of the season against Swansea in the FA Cup with Francis Coquelin in that position – that could be Yanga-Mbiwa’s route into the first team for the Gunners.
