The Barcelona forward is high on Arsene Wenger’s list as an attacking target for the January transfer window, with the Gunners boss admitting after his team’s FA Cup victory over Brighton and Hove Albion that more firepower was needed.
Signing Spain’s record highest goalscorer would certainly be a good start, and there is certainly no doubt about David Villa’s quality.
However, the critical factor in this potential transfer deal is Villa’s age – and as a result, price.
Arsene Wenger is unsurprisingly reluctant to pay much over £10 million for a 31 year-old, though Barcelona reportedly want closer to £15m.
Economically though, it makes sense on a number of levels – and of course Wenger is a studied economist.
David Villa’s goals could help Arsenal overtake Everton and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for the final UEFA Champions League place – and that would be worth significantly more to the club than the Spaniard’s likely transfer fee.
Similarly, Sir Alex Ferguson knew that Robin Van Persie’s goals could make the difference between last season’s second place finish and winning the Barclays Premier League title.
Thanks to the extraordinary Dutchman, Manchester United sit five points clear at the top of the table.
Perhaps Villa could have a similar effect for Arsenal.
