Gunners ready to spark bidding war for England international.
Arsenal have reportedly made a £20m bid for Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, according to the Sunday Mirror.
It is reported that the Gunners have made the first move in the pursuit of the 27-year-old, which is now expected to spark Chelsea into action as a bidding war gets under way for the England international.
However, it is understood that United are insisting that Rooney is not for sale, despite telling the club of his desire to leave at the end of last season.
Rooney has since dismissed that speculation, claiming that he never asked former manager Sir Alex Ferguson for a transfer.
New United boss David Moyes is reportedly set to meet with Rooney this week to discuss his future, and the player is expected to ask for reassurances about his role with the club.
Following the arrival of Robin van Persie, it is believed that Rooney grew frustrated with being asked to play in different positions, something he is keen to sort out ahead of next season.
However, the Premier League champions have maintained throughout the summer that their striker is not for sale, despite interest from league rivals and the likes of PSG and Monaco.
There has been no official confirmation from either club that a bid has been made for the services of the former Everton man, but it remains to be seen whether he will still be at Old Trafford at the start of the new campaign.
